Bio

JD McGann is  a songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, originally from NYC (5th generation), where as a teenager in the ‘80s he experienced the death of Lennon and the birth of Hip-Hop.

He studied classical piano, jazz with Dick Hyman, blues and rock in Village clubs, guitar with the late Howard Morgan, and tenor sax in high school bands. He also earned a B.A. from Columbia in Music and English, where his orchestral work was performed.

Early credits include producing hip hop underground legend O.C., engineering early Nas demos, and mixing tracks for Organized Konfusion and Lordz of Brooklyn. He has performed with Tanya Pinkins, co-wrote and produced songs with JES, as well as The Jones and other Wetlands jam bands. He worked as audio engineer alongside internet pioneer Marc Scarpa in 1996, streaming the earliest webcasts for a downtown nyc music festival sponsored by Apple.

A special thanks to Alex Alexander, who performed most of the drums, percussion and drum programming on many of the recordings; Catherine Russell, for gracing her presence on two of my songs early on, and to John Hanti for their ongoing support through the years.  RIP to Roy Cicala, legendary Record Plant founder who mixed two of JD’s early songs.
